The novel is based on the Acholi people of Central Lwo, in East Africa, during the difficult transition to western civilization between the period 1850s — 1950s. The Novel depicts many true and factual events of cultural, customary, economic, historical, political and social activities, which are built around two protagonists whose names feature as role models in Acholi or Lwo folklores. Awili and Onguka p’Owiny feature often as the most elegant youths in Acholi Folktales, and are appropriately adopted as leading characters in this Novel. They do not represent any known individuals in this context and there has never been a Pipinno Chiefdom in Acholiland, known to the author.
