A practical method, backed by peer-reviewed research, for reimagining work to create your most distinctive, creative, energetic, and relatable professional self.
In far too many organizations, the idea of bringing your 'full self' to the job is a liability.
Emotion beyond enthusiasm for the task at hand is deemed unprofessional. Personal identity must be compressed into a carefully curated bio: relatable yet inoffensive.
When people are conditioned to flatten the full social and emotional complexities of themselves, spirits dull and progress stalls, in life and in the workplace.
But for a growing number of people, especially younger generations, this form of workplace culture no longer works. Surveys show that fewer individuals are willing to sacrifice their time and quality of life for a career, let alone an organization. With an increased focus on purpose, meaning, and mental health, many refuse to scrub their emotions, or the full range of their identities, to keep their professional lives separate.
At the same time, in more progressive settings, the encouragement to bring people's full selves to work has sometimes unleashed more authenticity and personal revelation than managers and teams know how to handle.
