The Art of the Unmeasurable – Mosaics from Architectural Practice, explores the experience and knowledge that lie at the heart of architectural practice. Drawing on a lifetime of professional work, architect Thomas Scheel reflects on how architecture emerges through the interplay of practical experience, craftsmanship, and philosophical inquiry. Rather than presenting architecture solely as a technical or rational discipline, the book reveals it as a creative process shaped by judgment, intuition, and a deep sensitivity to place, materials, people, and context.
Central to the book is the idea of the unmeasurable the open realm where ideas have not yet taken form but where new possibilities begin to emerge. Scheel argues that architecture is born not only through analysis and planning, but through a continuous dialogue between thought and action, in which the undefined gradually becomes concrete. Before every design can be measured or drawn, it must first be sensed, imagined, and understood. Engaging with classical concepts such as techne and poiesis, as well as contemporary debates about the measurable and the unmeasurable, the book grounds philosophical reflection in the realities of architectural practice. Design processes, material choices, collaboration, and decision-making become starting points for a broader exploration of architecture s deeper meaning.
Rather than following a conventional linear narrative, the book unfolds as a mosaic of interconnected essays. Together they trace the journey from the first spark of an idea to the completed building and the responsibility that comes with shaping environments in which people live, work, and flourish. Both deeply personal and intellectually ambitious, The Art of the Unmeasurable offers a compelling reflection on architecture as a way of thinking, making, and understanding the world. It is a book for architects, students, and anyone interested in the creative processes that shape the built environment.
