What if your habits weren't helping you-but holding you back?
We live in a world obsessed with habits-morning routines, step counts, meal plans, productivity hacks. But what if our relentless focus on optimization is doing more harm than good?
In The Habit Trap, award-winning health and science journalist Markham Heid explores the hidden downsides of our habit-obsessed culture. Drawing on two decades of science reporting and a wide body of psychological and neuroscientific research, he reveals how even good habits can limit creativity, dull motivation, and trap us in unfulfilling cycles.
Heid doesn't call for chaos, but for flexibility-arguing that variety, spontaneity, and imperfection are not signs of failure, but essential ingredients for long-term growth and wellbeing. Part manifesto, part practical guide, The Habit Trap invites readers to question the narratives they've been sold about structure and control-and find freedom in the unexpected.
